This Codes and Standards course provides a thorough introduction to the major codes and standards that regulate security system installations. The course begins with an overview of key organizations and their publications, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes like NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code, and NFPA 70 National Electrical Code; International Code Council (ICC) publications including the IBC, IRC and IFC; and relevant UL standards for alarm systems and central stations.
Students will learn the critical role of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), understanding their responsibilities in interpreting codes, approving equipment, and granting special permissions. The course distinguishes between codes and standards, explaining how they work together in system design and installation.
